Namaste Community Foundation (NFC-Nepal) is a not-for-profit, non-political, humanitarian organization and is not affiliated with any religious group or organization. It is registered as an NGO in Nepal with the motives of furthering development activities for the needy children and women’s sector of Nepal and is affiliated with the Social Welfare Council, Kathmandu. NCF is dedicated to providing education, healthcare and love in a safe home-style environment for the poor, needy, orphaned and abandoned children, giving school support for the children from poor economic families, offering hearing treatments for those with hearing losses, granting financial assistance to start small businesses, training inessential skills for jobs, as well as, arranging a unique opportunity for people from around the world to get involved in social work.

Initially, it was registered as Namaste Children’s House to support housing facilities for about 60 orphaned children of Pokhara, Nepal. It quickly became evident that there was much more to be addressed, thus, the new projects were gradually added. Later, to represent all the activities of the foundation, the board decided to change the name to Namaste Community Foundation as the old name was mostly targeting the children’s homes.

Currently, we are running following social projects:

1) Children Home Program (Residential Children Home)

2) Scholarship Program (Educational Support)

3) Women Empowerment Program (Training and skill development)

4) Women Entrepreneurship Development Program (Financial support)

Women Entrepreneurship Development Program

This program was launched with the purpose to liberate the people from their financial dependency especially to those living below the level of poverty. In this program, we provide micro credits to women who have successfully completed the training from “Woman Empowerment Project” to start their own business.

“This project was born out of a desire to provide the needy people of Nepal with an angling rod and to teach them how to fish, instead of ‘feeding’ them the fish. It aims to reduce dependency through helping disadvantaged people to start their own micro businesses.

The project includes initial training, micro financial support and regular monitoring. Once the selected families understand the program and the possibility of creating self-sustainability, most of them decide on either starting a vegetable shop, tea shop, having a small farm, raising cattles or taking up sewing & Tariloring business. Every families are provided with a 2 months additional time in which they are not obligated to pay any interest and installments. But at the end of 3rd month they should start up with their first installment and pay the same amount continuously for 24 months. This is because of the realization that people won’t value anything that is for free nor they become responsible. Moreover, it is also focused towards encouraging women entrepreneurship for financial independence.

Women Empowerment Program

This program not only provides training for single women living below the level of poverty but also provides psycho social counselling and business classes. Women are motivated to start their own business by communicating the success stories of different personalities.

“The Women’s Empowerment Project (WEP) is designed to empower single women who have been living nearby Pokhara and Ghachowk, yet have many difficulties obtaining the training and skills necessary for employment due to their poverty level.

Many women and girls have been exploited in horrific ways such as: sexual abuse or trafficking of young girls who end up in the brothels of Indian cities. Due to illiteracy and gender inequality most of the domestic violence is kept secret with the fear of losing social reputation mainly to prevent possible rejection from their male counter parts. There are no clear laws to deal with this situation.

The empowerment of the women will be one big step forward to overall development of the nation. As Nepal has already entered into a new age of change, equality between male and female should be one of the top priorities for policy makers. Unfortunately, the policies are determined slowly and have not been implemented yet into society. Our organization aims to reach the society by implementing this project from the bottom up, by providing the women with the necessary skills.

To start this program, we have already taken a big step forward. Together with Wilde Ganzen & NCDO Netherlands, the WEP building has been completed and is in operation. We have already conducted three months of training in tailoring and a second phase of training on agriculture and livestock has recently been started. This program not only provides technical knowledge but also provides enough motivational classes, business classes, counseling service as well as micro finance support so the participants can implement their knowledge and skills into their everyday lives.”

Scholarship Program

Under this program students receive a continuous scholarship support until they receive their school leaving certificate examination. Children getting scholarship support will be admitted in a Government school by covering all school cost, costs for two pairs of uniform, shoes, socks, stationary materials, books, school bags, transportation etc.

NCF Scholarship Programme was developed in August 2004 as a result of fieldwork. When visiting villages and rural areas, many families were found to be without the financial resources to send their children to school, although they were quite capable of looking after their own children with some financial help. Therefore, NCF decided to support these children in attending the local government school by helping them with admittance fees and by covering other costs such as medical expenses, books and uniforms related to their attendance at the school. Depending on the financial situation of the family, children are provided with either full or partial scholarships. NCF monitors the attendance and performance of all of the scholarship children.

Namaste Children's House

All the children in NCF’s orphanage come from very difficult and traumatic backgrounds. The majority of children are from Kaski and neighboring districts, but some have been rescued from the jails in the Rajbiraj, Dhankuta and Kapilbastu districts, the landslides from the eastern part of Nepal and from the streets of Pokhara. Children’s health and happiness is the basis on which NCF develops all values underpinning everyone’s life at Namaste Community Foundation. These children are cared for under our two homes: the orphanage in Lakeside Pokhara and Damside Pokhara, respectively. The home and dedicated staff of NCF provides shelter, a balanced diet, clothing, medical care, education and parental care, security and love. The highest standards of care and cleanliness are maintained so that all children develop healthy practices that will help them in their future lives. The children are also encouraged to assist in normal household duties so that they will grow up to be responsible self-reliant adults. The daily program includes activities such as morning yoga, reading, tidying, school, playtime and guided homework. The work of the orphanage staff is supported by the volunteer program.

Our priority is to accommodate children from different caste, religion, area, culture, situation, background, age and help them adapt behaviour in a home style children house with full realization of their rights and responsibilities.
